Last week we caught up with Pete Waterman OBE on his current tour. The famous record producer, songwriter, radio and club DJ, television presenter, president of Coventry Bears rugby league club and a keen railway enthusiast has a pretty impressive track record in making hit records down the years.
We asked him what it was like working with so many singers and bands who needed a little 'Pete Magic' to make an average song into hit material. Although a lot is revealed on stage in what is a revealing insight into his many passions, his business acumen and talent at spotting a good 'tune' when he hears one is revealed in a humorous and honest way. Of all his clients, we asked him which voice most impressed him. His answer was 70's diva Donna Summer. "Everybody in the building would come to listen to her warming up her incredible vocals" Pete said. Sadly she passed away in 2012 but he reinvented her career as did so many others - including Sir Cliff Richard. To reveal more you will have to go and see the man who has the unique distinction of being the most successful producer-songwriter in British history. His many awards and recognitions include 13 Ivor Novellos – which is not bad for someone who left school unable to read or write.
Responsible for over 500 million record sales around the world, Pete has worked with a who’s who of artists including Kylie,Jason Donovan, Donna Summer, Rick Astley, John Travolta and Steps to name a few.
The Original Hitman Musical Mogul - Live in Conversation is on at venues around the UK (see website details for more details).
