Magical Mystery Tour

Updated: Dec 4, 2018

"Roll up. Roll up.... it's the Magical Mystery Tour and it's waiting to take you away"....

A small office in Albert Dock was where we started our journey. Donned with the essential map of the tour, we crossed the road to join around 50 fellow Beatles fans and board the multi coloured Magical Mystery Tour bus. Our tour guide Ray Johnson (brother of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's lead singer Holly) introduced driver Ray and a rough itinerary of our 2 hour tour around the Beatles old haunts and important landmarks in the city.

First up was Ringoland, The Welsh Streets and our first stop of the tour Penny Lane - arguably the most famous street name in musical history. As we were soon to find out, it is the busy thoroughfare at the roundabout end where the famous song comes to life so vividly. The barbers, bus shelter and fire station (now sadly closed) are still around of course. George Harrison's Arnold Grove home was the next stop.

One of the highlights of the tour is naturally Strawberry Fields....

The former Woolton Salvation Army home now has big plans to make it a tranquil place for every visitor to enjoy - forever. A campaign is hoping to create a new training and work placement hub for young people with learning disabilities, where they can learn skills, gain work experience, grow in confidence and achieve. Our host Jay's passion for his beloved city was evident in recalling all the facts of the fab four that his customers wanted to know. It was therefore fitting that the last place we passed was the the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. A performing arts university founded by Paul McCartney and Mark Featherstone-Witty - an institution that the Beatle to this day is an avid and fervant supporter of.

As we arrived close to the iconic Cavern Club in Mathew Street (where else?) at the end of our Magical Mystery ride, the answer to the two hour journey was already in the lyrics...

"Roll up They've got everything you need Roll up for the Mystery Tour Roll up Satisfaction guaranteed Roll up for the Mystery Tour "
